We are thrilled with your response to our Books for Kids 2017 campaign. So far we have raised $22,083 to provide books and programs to children and families across the Columbia Basin and Boundary region!
Just how big is CBAL? During the 2016-17 program year, CBAL’s vision to help communities across the Columbia Basin and Boundary region be healthy, inclusive and committed to literacy remained steadfast. We provided services to thousands of Basin and Boundary residents through literacy programs, workshops and events. Our work was supported by an incredible set of funders, partners, volunteers and board members. This fall, an unexpected partnership was forged between the Nelson and District Youth Centre (NDYC) and the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) Nelson. The CBAL office and the CBAL Learning Place moved into the NDYC building in October. CBAL needed a new space and the NDYC was keen on expanding their connections with the community beyond youth. It was a good opportunity for both organizations. Although a youth centre isn’t the first place that comes to mind when looking for a new home for a community literacy space, the arrangement with CBAL and NDYC is working well. These days, seniors with their iPads and families with young children pass youth in the indoor skate park as they head to their CBAL programs. The youth centre is becoming a place for all ages. The positive spin-offs resulting from this partnership are pleasing everyone. “We are more connected to the community and our partners. People pop in all the time to see what we are up to and to learn about what we do,” says Nelson Community Literacy Coordinator, Joan Exley. CBAL Nelson has worked with the NDYC in the past, but being in the same building is allowing CBAL to expand upon this foundation. Relationships are being built and strengthened. Joan Exley adds, “We are excited about where this might go – the potential is unlimited." Barb Szuta Community Literacy and Communications Coordinator |
