If you're in the Slocan Valley, keep your eyes peeled for Wild Books.  The process is simple:

  • pick up a Wild Book - you could find one anywhere!
  • read the book
  • put the book back into the wild (release in a public place) or keep it for yourself!

If you want to do something extra you can release a new book into the wild by picking up sticker from one of several locations in the Valley.  Place the sticker in the book you want to release and and place it in a public place for someone else to enjoy.

If you're lucky enough to be at the Mt. Sentinel High School, you can find several Wild Books onsite.  Pick stickers up a the library to release your own book into the school stream!

If you have any questions about this program, please contact Alison Salo at asalo@cbal.org.

CBAL Cranbrook launches Wild Books on Monday Jan 28th in honour of Family Literacy Week!

Here are the details:

  • The launch site is Max's Place on 10th Ave in Cranbrook at 2:00 pm
  • A variety of books (children's as well as adults' and teens') will be set free into the community to be caught and released
  • Each book will have a sticker and book mark outlining the program
  • The Cranbrook Public Library will host the labels and more bookmarks so others can release their own books into the wild
  • Posters will be hung in establishments hosting wild book sites (i.e. Max's) but Wild Books can be found anywhere

Keep your eyes peeled for 'seemingly' discarded books lying about - they just might be a Wild Book!

Get ready! Coming soon to a community near you!

We love the wilds. And, we love books. A new CBAL initiative in some communities is the Wild Books - Catch and Release project - an initiative to share books, for free, and for fun in communities.

Look for a book with the Wild Books label on it - in a shop, cafe, grocery store, window sill, bench or popular spot. If you find one, pick it up, take it home, read it. Then - either release it to the wild, keep it, or release a book of your own (put the label on it). Come back to our blog and write a review about your experience.

Check with your Community Literacy Coordinator to find out about Wild Books in your area.
