Children and Family Literacy Programs
Books for Babies gives a book bag with baby’s book and community information regarding programs for children to families with newborns. Bags are given to families through the Public Health Unit.
Family Literacy Drop-in is an opportunity to get information about our current programs and workshops, learn about the "Share the Word" book exchange and to get answers to your questions about your child's leaning and progress.
Family Night Out is a night out for the whole family. A healthy meal and family group activities are all part of this family learning time.
Little Goslings Activity Time is for older siblings of Mother Goose babies. This program is designed like a short preschool circle time and includes fun with rhymes, stories and a craft with a facilitator.
Mother Goose is a program for parents with babies and toddlers that encourages early language development through rhymes, songs, finger-plays and stories.
One to One Children’s Literacy Program pairs trained community volunteers with children in schools. Children in the program read with a volunteer four times a week for half an hour.
Parents as Literacy Supporters (PALS) is an opportunity for parents to join their children at kindergarten to take part in activities and learn strategies to support children’s language, literacy and numeracy development. There are four sessions in each kindergarten.
Parents of Primary Students (POPS) is an extension of the PALS program for Grade 1 and 2 students. Sessions include quality family experiences and learning around reading, writing and math. The program includes participating in learning activities, adult workshops and take home kits.
Reading Workshop for Parents shares strategies, materials and stories with parents to help lessen the stress and increase the enjoyment of reading at home. Parents have the opportunity to ask specific questions and discuss concerns around supporting their child’s reading.
Roots of Empathy is a program for children and is taught in kindergarten to Grade 8. A baby is introduced in each class and visits throughout the year. There are nine themes that are designed to assist children in developing empathy.
“Share the Word” Book Exchange offers free books for all ages to borrow and bring back or keep and treasure. There are now eight locations!
Story Adventure Kits are take-home bags which include a book and engaging activities for families to explore together. These kits are provided for loan through the StrongStart Early Learning Centre and the Revelstoke Child Care Society’s Early Learning Lending Library.
Adult Literacy Programs
The Learning Place is a drop-in program offering adults an opportunity to improve their basic technology skills using computers, tablets and smart phones. Get help with individual questions and support finding out about learning in our community.
Adult Literacy Tutoring and English as a Second Language services are offered through Okanagan College.
