Family Literacy Programs - Lions Hall, 1100 Main St.
Play and Learn
– An interactive morning program for mothers, fathers, care-givers and their pre-school children, which explores ways to support emerging literacy development. Periodic guest speakers. Child minding and nutritious snacks are provided. Co-sponsored by the Valemount Lions Club.Parent-Child Mother Goose®
– An engaging afternoon program for young children and their parents/care-givers, designed to aid early language development through song, rhyme and storytelling. Periodic guest speakers related to infant development. Nutritious snacks provided. Co-hosted with Robson Valley Support Society; co-sponsored by Success By 6® and the Valemount Lions Club.Making Connections
–A family evening program, focussed on literacy development (K - 6), through parent participation. A quick, healthy dinner is provided, after which parents/care-givers will learn techniques for supporting children’s education, while kids do any homework they have, then enjoy facilitated activities. Registration required to plan for dinners. Co-sponsored by the Valemount Lions Club.Children’s Literacy - Valemount Public Library, 1090 Main St.
The Secret Garden
– Community members reading weekly installments of thisclassic story to an audience of children, followed by an hour of related crafts and stories. Children under 6 must be accompanied by an adult or teen care-giver. Co-hosted with the Valemount Public Library.
On-going Services
Books for Babies
– A special bag with books, CDs and info on infant development, programs and services. Co-sponsored by the Valemount Public Library and the Public Health Office; distributed through the Public Health Nurse.Events and Workshops:
Literacy Rocks! January 27/10
– Following the 2010 Family Literacy Day theme of music, the community is invited to join local musicians/vocalists at the Lions Hall, 4 - 6 p.m. Co-hosted with the Valemount Public Library; co-sponsored by the Valemount Lions Club.Brain Gym
– One day workshop on an active and useful form of mental stimulation. Date, location: TBA.Dyslexia Awareness
– Six evening workshops for all ages, designed to raise awareness of the many aspects of Dyslexia. Participants will view and discuss a movie, receive currentinformation, learn techniques and be visited by speakers from local and distant agencies. Nutritious snacks provided; no separate child minding. Dates and times above; location TBA.
Plain Language
