Family Literacy Programs
Books for Babies
– a bag with a baby’s book, CD, DVD, t-shirt that says “Read To Me” and community information regarding programs for parenting and for children is given to families with newborns through the public health unit.ESL Family Time
– is a program for adults who are English Language Learners and their children. This program offers parents and preschoolers the opportunity to explore and learn together and an interactive circle time. There are child minders on-site so that parents can attend a one-hour ESL class.Family Night Out
– is a drop-in Family Literacy program where parents and children gather to be involved in activities that promote literacy skills. Some of the activities may include experiments, storytelling, games involving critical thinking skills, and listening to guest speakers.LEAP into Kindergym
– is a program for parents/caregivers and children ages 2-5. In a drop in setting, parents and children socialize, play organized group games, have free playtime, circle time, sing, and play movement games.Literacy Lending Libraries
– have toys, books and other resources available on loan to families, volunteer tutors, and other members of the public. Libraries are available at Trail Middle School, Webster and Glenmerry Elementary School.Love 2 Learn
– is a program for parents or caregivers and their preschoolers. Program includes exploring and learning together, a structured story time, parent discussions, snack, craft activities, and a book lending library.One to One
– program has community volunteers trained to read with children in school. Children in the program read with a volunteer 4 times a week for ½ hour. Trail and Castlegar Family Literacy partner to provide the volunteer tutor training.Parent-Child Mother Goose
– is a group experience for parents or caregivers and their babies and young children, focusing on the pleasure and power of using rhymes, songs, and stories together.Roots of Empathy
– is a program for children and is taught in grades Kindergarten to grade 8. A baby is introduced in each class and visits throughout the year. There are 9 themes that are designed to assist children in developing empathy.Stress Free Reading at Home
– is a parent program that is designed to share ideas and materials with parents; to help parents lessen the stress and increase the enjoyment of reading at home with their children; and to answer specific questions and concerns parents may have around supporting their children’s reading.Adult Literacy Programs
Adult Basic Computer Classes
– is a series of 8 computer classes. It offers adults and seniors the opportunity to improve their computer skills, including word processing, file management, formatting text, creating tables, email and using the internet.Adult Tutoring Program
– offers one-on-one and group instruction for adults wishing to improve their reading, writing, math, and computer literacy skills.English as a Second Language Conversation Club
– offers learners one morning and one evening a week to get together for informal sessions filled with word games, reading, storytelling and conversation.English as a Second Language Tutoring Program
– offers individuals seeking to improve and enhance their English language development, both oral and written, one-on-one or group-based instruction.ESL Parent Café
