Adult Tutoring Program
– one-on-one instruction for adults wishing to improve their reading, writing and/or math skills. Includes individual help for those needing assistance preparing for the citizenship exams, learners’ driver's test, and basic computer skills.Bigby Place Literacy Program
– is a program with individual tutoring to develop reading,writing and comprehension skills with participants of Bigby Place, an adult day program for people accessing services through the Society for Community Living.
Books Everywhere!
– Watch for Books Everywhere! bins full of wonderful books for all ages around town. There are 14 locations for this new lending library. Books can be read at the location or taken home and returned to any Books Everywhere! bin in town. When you're done with a book you can pass it to a friend or put it back in the Books Everywhere! bin. BE! is a partnership between CBAL and the Nelson Municipal Library.Computer Literacy for Seniors – “Cyber Seniors”
– offers Seniors an opportunity to improve their computer skills, including word processing, file management, formatting text, creating tables, email and using the internet.Cyber Seniors’ Lab Time
– is a weekly open lab time for seniors. One on One help with trained youth and staff will be available for any seniors who have done level one Cyber Seniors.Community Literacy Award
– Watch for the renewal of this award coming this spring. Individuals, businesses and organizations can be nominated to win. The award is a beautiful piece of art designed by Live Metalworks!English as a Second Language Class
– is a small multi-level group for English as a second language learners. The focus is on oral and written work. All are welcome. There is a continual intake of students.English as a Second Language Conversation Club
– is a new program focusing on English conversation skills. Activities will include monthly community outings, word games, reading, storytelling and conversation.English as a Second Language Tutoring Program
– is a program for individuals seeking to improve and enhance their English language development. Students are provided with one-on-one tutoring and work on both oral and written work.Love 2 Learn
– is an early learning program for children 2-5 and their parents or caregivers. A facilitator leads a circle time with songs, stories, and rhymes. The facilitator models ways in which the parent can engage the child in conversations and activities around literacy. Materials are available for learning through play experiences. The program includes a lending library and ideas to take home.One to One Reading
– Community volunteers are trained to read with children in school. Children in the program read with a volunteer 4 times a week for ½ hour. Our strategies are aimed at increasing self-confidence and skills. Volunteers make a difference!Parent-Child Mother Goose (Infant and Toddler programs)
– Rhymes, songs, fingerplays and stories are taught to parents and children aged newborn to 4 years over a period of several weeks.Read It Forward
– is a program providing books at the Nelson Food Cupboard. Books for all ages and all reading abilities and styles are available to borrow or keep.N’Gauge Youth Library
– CBAL in Nelson in partnership with the Nelson Municipal Library and Nelson Youth Centre have put together a Youth Library that is housed at the Nelson Youth Centre and at Central Education Centre in the REACH program. This outreach collection includes a variety of reading materials meant to be engaging and exciting. New additions to the N’guage Library are made in consultation with the Youth of Nelson.Stress Free Reading at Home
– is a parent workshop that is linked closely to the One to One Reading program. The program’s aim is three fold: to share ideas, materials and stories with parents; to help parents lessen the stress and increase the enjoyment of reading at home with their children; and to answer specific questions and concerns parent may have around supporting their children’s reading.The Learning Place
– is a new space for community partners to come together to offer literacy programs, provide services and have resources and information available to learners, community members and service providers. The Learning Place includes space for group work, individual work and paired tutoring.
