Calendar of Program Times for Kimberley (PDF)

The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) in Kimberley offers a variety of literacy and learning opportunities for children, youth and families. All the programs are free to participants.

Strong Start
 – a Family drop-in program for parents with children 5 and under to play and interact together in a supportive and educational environment. StrongStart is offered 4 days at the Early Learning Center. It is one day/wk at Marysville Elementary School and at Lindsay Park Elementary School in partnership with SS, CBAL & CAPC. Play & Learn was 2 days/wk at the ELC this summer.These programs are supported by School District #6 and the North Star Dream Team
Play & Learn Parenting and Literacy
 –  a parenting and early literacy program for parents. Children 5 and under enjoy a a facilitated play and activity component while parents are in their group. This program is offered in partnership by CBAL, Nobody’s Perfect Parenting and Public Health Nursing.
Learning & Reading Partners – Making Connections
 –  a course for parents of school age children to teach parents learning and reading strategies which their children can use at school and in life.
Family Tutoring
 – Family Tutoring provides a tutor to help families experiencing difficulties with their children’s learning skills. Adult Tutoring & ESL programs will provide a trained 1-1 volunteer tutor and/or offer a facilitated group to help support adults with their literacy skills.
Selkirk Book/Writing Club
  – a facilitated group to support students interested in sharing and discussing books together and writing book reviews. Offered in partnership with Selkirk staff.
POPS Program (Parents of Primary Students)
  –Parents of Primary Students (POPS) This program offers evening sessions throughout the year where parents, students and their primary teacher come together to be actively involved in learning. It is a partnership program between home, school and community. Offered with the support of School District #6
Baby Goose
 – this is a free, drop-in program for parents and their babies. This is a group experiences aimed at teaching songs and rhymes and providing information about infant development and related topics in a relaxed, supportive and fun environment. Baby Goose is offered in partnership with the Public Health Nursing.
One to One Reading
 – an in-school program where children from grades 1-5, read with trained volunteer tutors for 30 minutes a day, four days a week, for ten weeks, to practice and improve their literacy skills and increase their confidence and self esteem. Training and support are provided to implement this program at Marysville, Lindsay Park and McKim Schools.
Cruise-In
 – an after school program at McKim Middle School to support students with their schoolwork and literacy skills. This program is offered in partnership by CBAL and the Community Links and Aboriginal Support Workers
Adult Cooking
 –  is a literacy/cooking program for adults. We offer this program through the Kimberley Food Bank
Alphabet Soup
 –  a literacy through cooking program for parents and preschoolers. We offer this program in partnership by CBAL and the Kimberley Food Bank
Roots Of Empathy
  – a classroom-based parenting program for children that aims to reduce aggression through the fostering of empathy and emotional literacy. A baby and parent visit a class once a month for a full school year with a facilitator coaching the children to observe the baby’s development and learn about babies’ needs.
Seniors Computer Classes
  – beginner and intermediate classes to teach basic computer knowledge & practice new skills
Gently Used Book Drive
  – annual book drive collection to include books in the Food Bank Christmas hampers
Books For Babies
  – books, information regarding the importance of reading and community program information is given to families with newborns. Offered in partnership with the Kimberley Teachers’ Association and Public Health Nursing
