Family Literacy Programs and Events

Strong Start Parent and Child Time
 –  A drop-in program where parents can spend time with their young children while enjoying the company and support of other parents. Enjoy circle time, toys, crafts, books, exploration activities, snacks and a lending library of parenting books and videos.
Parent-Child Mother Goose
 –  Rhymes and songs are taught to parents and their young children. It’s a fun and informal way to help develop a child’s early literacy skills. Programs available for 0 – 2 ½ and 2 ½ - 4 year olds. A snack is provided. Programs are advertised and pre-registration is required.
Books for Babies
 –  Each new baby in the community receives a bag which contains a “Read to Me Bib”, a book, a CD and information about programs for parents with young children.
Families Behind Books
 –  This annual book drove collects gently used children’s books and redistributes them to families around Meadow Creek, Kaslo and Balfour. New books are purchased and given out to children whose families receive a Christmas hamper.
Children Succeeding
 – This program shares ideas and activities with parents that will help them support the learning and emerging literacy skills of their preschool children. A snack is provided. The program is advertised and pre-registration is required.
Family Literacy Week
 –  Throughout the community, events are held to celebrate literacy.
Stress Free Reading at Home Workshop
 – This parent workshop offers practical tips on how to help children with their reading at home. Ideas and materials are shared and questions and concerns are addressed. A great take-home booklet is provided.

Adult Literacy programs and events

ESL Tutoring
 –  A program for adult, English as a Second Language, learners who wish to improve their reading, writing and conversation skills.
Life-Long Learning Series
 –  A variety of events, speakers and workshops are brought into the community for anyone interested in continuing their life-long learning.
Study Skill Classes
 – Knowing key study skills can help you become a better learner. Topics covered include: learning styles, time management, active listening and reading and test taking.
Authors’ Series
  – Authors share their books and adventures in writing. Both children’s and adults’ authors participate in this series.
Books on Wheels
  – Volunteers deliver books, audio books, VHS videos, DVDs and CDs from the public library to Kaslo residents who otherwise would be unable to access the library’s collection.
Clear Language Workshop
  – Learn tips on how to write and design a document with clear language during this 1 ½ hour workshop.
