Alliance for Literacy

 


Adult Tutoring Program - one-on-one instruction for adults wishing to improve their reading, writing and/or math skills. Includes individual help for those needing assistance preparing for the citizenship exams, learners driver's test, and basic computer skills.

 

Annual Literacy Award - an award given to a business or organization for its exceptional support of literacy.

 

Bigby Place Literacy Program - individual tutoring to develop reading, writing and comprehension skills with participants of Bigby Place, an adult day program for people accessing services through the Society for Community Living.

 

Books for Babies - a BC Government sponsored program for families organized through the Nelson Municipal Library. Nelson Family Literacy contributes a new additional book for families for this program.

 

Early Literacy Theme Packets - Family Literacy provides early literacy ideas based on the Family Place weekly play group themes. A package of fun ideas is used at play groups to help families incorporate ideas for early literacy into their homes.

 

English as a Second Language Class - small multi-level group for English as a second language learners. Focus on oral and written work.

 

English as a Second Language Tutoring Program - individuals seeking to improve and enhance their English language development, both oral and written, are provided with one-on-one tutoring.

 

Parent-Child Mother Goose (Infant and Toddler programs) - rhymes, songs, finger plays and stories taught to parents and children aged newborn to 2 years and 18 months to 3 years over a period of several weeks.

 

Love 2 Learn - a program for preschoolers and their parents. A facilitator leads a circle time with songs, stories, and rhymes. The facilitator models ways in which the parent can engage the child in conversations and activities around literacy. Materials are available for learning through play experiences. The program includes a lending library and ideas to take home

 

Senior's Reading Group - tutors from the adult literacy program read popular literature to a group of seniors at Jubilee Manor.
