A Book Under Every Tree - books are gathered during November and early December for distribution to families at Christmas time. 

 

Adult tutoring program - one-on-one and group instruction for adults wishing to improve their reading, writing, math and/or computer literacy skills

 

Alphabet Soup - an early literacy program for children ages 4-5 and their parent(s). Children learn to “read” picture recipes and practice new cooking skills and language. Rhymes, songs, stories, and alphabet scrapbooks are also part of this program.
At the Hutton Strong Start Centre – starting Oct. 4/07 - 1:30-3:15

 

English as a Second Language Conversation Club - offers learners a chance to get together for informal sessions filled with word games, reading, storytelling and conversation.

 

English as a Second Language Tutoring Program - offers individuals seeking to improve and enhance their English language development, both oral and written, one-on-one or group-based instruction.

Family Literacy Week - Throughout the community, events are held to celebrate literacy
January 20-27, 2008

 

Festive Family Storytime - guest musicians and storytellers providing stories and songs. Free books for families.
At the Grand Forks Public Library – December 6/07 - 6:30-8:00

 

Homework Club - an after school program for parents and children of all ages to work together on skills to help with school success.
At the Grand Forks Public Library – starting Oct. 10/07 - 3:45-4:45

 

Lexia - an interactive computer based phonics program that gives adult learners extensive practice in decoding and vocabulary building. The computer sessions are paired with 1-1 tutoring to support the learning.

One to One - community volunteers trained to read with children in school. Children in the program read with a volunteer 4 times a week for ½ hour.
Starting October 15, 2007 at Perley Elementary School

 

Parent-Child Mother Goose/Baby Goose - rhymes, songs, fingerplays and stories taught to parents and children over a period of several weeks.

Rosetta Stone Learning Software - a fun and interactive computer based English as a Second Language program that gives adult learners a chance to practice their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in a natural way. The computer sessions are paired with 1-1 tutoring to support the learning

The Sharing Books Box - a box of books either given or taken to different programs, open houses, literacy events, full of free, gently used reading material. Program participants are encouraged to help themselves to as many books as they would like to keep. Boxes can be found at each of the Family Centres located throughout the Boundary.

Writing Out Loud - a writing program that improves writing skills and is an invaluable aid in self-discovery and learning to cope with problems.
