Family Tutoring - a A private tutor is provided free to families where some member has identified a literacy-related area of difficulty. Parents and children receive assistance one hour per week. Communities served are Crawford Bay, Wynndel, and Creston and its outlying rural areas.
Books for Babies - In partnership with the Creston Public Library and the Creston Public Health Nurses (Interior Health), informative book bags are distributed to parents with newborn babies
A Book Under Every Tree - Creston Community Literacy collects new and "gently-used" adult and children's books in boxes placed throughout the community, for distribution in Creston's Christmas Hamper Program.
'Settling In' English as a Second Language Program - Individuals seeking to improve and enhance their English Language development, both spoken and written, and learn more about Canadian society, are provided with one-on-one tutor and group-based instruction, two classes per week.
Adult Basic Tutoring - Adults who are seeking to improve their literacy skills - Reading, Writing & Math, from emergent readers up.
One-to-One Volunteer Tutoring Program - A school based program that uses volunteers from the community to provide one-to-one reading tutoring to children who need extra practice and help to develop their reading skills. Children in the program read with a volunteer 4 times a week for ½ hour. This program has been in Canyon-Lister for the past year and has recently started in Wynndel School. It is our hope to also start one at Yahk School in the near future.
Family Fun Nights - An evening of fun literacy based activities families to enjoy together. Five Family Fun Nights will run once per month for 5 months at the Yahk/Kingsgate Community Hall.
Adult Drop In Literacy Night - One night per week, for 3 hrs, at the Creston Learning Center, a facilitator will be available to help adults work on whatever literacy tasks they choose. be it computers skills, reading , forms, math, spelling, etc.
Computers For People - Surplus computers are revamped and given to families and adults who cannot afford one. If you have a computer to donate or are in need of one, please call Creston Community Literacy. Computer training is also provided, if necessary.
