Books for Babies - a canvas bag with a baby’s book, t-shirt that says “Read To Me”, and information about literacy and other programs and services for families with newborns.
Parent-Child Mother Goose - rhymes, songs, fingerplays and stories are taught to parents and children over a period of several weeks.
Held in Nakusp, Edgewood, and New Denver.
Homework Club - an after school program for parents and children of all ages to work together on skills to help with school success
This program is available at NES and LESS.
‘LAFF’ (Learning Adventures for Families) - a weekend and evening program for children (mainly pre-school) and their families to share activities, songs, rhymes, and crafts to help parents to be active partners in their children’s learning processes.
Held in Nakusp at Stepping Stones Children’s Centre.
Roots of Empathy - a program for children delivered in school classrooms to help increase empathy in school age children. A baby is introduced in each class and visits throughout the year. The children participate in a curriculum to identify the developmental traits of the baby, discuss various aspects of child-raising, and explore their own emotions as they observe the baby. This program is designed to assist children to develop empathy
Delivered in all elementary schools in the school district.
One to One Reading Program - community volunteers are trained to read with children in school. Children in the program read with a volunteer 3 times a week for ½ hour for an eight week session.
This program is offered in Nakusp, New Denver, Edgewood and Burton.
StrongStart program - A program designed to allow parents or caregivers an opportunity to work and learn with their preschool children in a school setting. The centre is set up as a centre based program where families can move freely around the room from activity to activity. The program operates for three hours per day five days per week at NES. Located at Nakusp Elementary School. Open 9:00-12:00 Mon, Wed, Fri and 12:30 to 3:30 Tues and Thurs
Adult Volunteer Tutoring program - One-on-one and small group instruction for adults wishing to improve their reading, writing, math and computer literacy skills.
Transitional Training program – Small group transitional training for adults with disabilities.
Classes Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at Selkirk College.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Small Group and Volunteer Tutoring program – one-on-one and small group instruction for adults wishing to improve their ESL speaking and literacy skills.
Classes Fridays 9-11, Selkirk College, Nakusp.
Nakusp and Area CAP (Community Access Program) Site– free computer and internet access for adults and children; one-on-one and small group computer-literacy instruction. The CAP Site is located in the School District 10 Board Office.
Open Monday to Friday 12:00 to 8:00 pm.
Nakusp Community Radio – the community radio station is located at the CAP Site. Volunteers program content for the radio station.
Literacy Lending Library – toys, books and other resources available on loan to families, volunteer tutors, and other members of the public. Located at the Nakusp CAP Site and Stepping Stones Children’s Centre.
Women’s Writing Group– a weekly writing program for women including journaling and poetry as a tool for life, the use of common place books and a book discussion group. Improves writing skills and is an invaluable aid in self-discovery and learning to cope with problems.
Classes Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:00 to 3:00 pm at Selkirk College.
WOW (Women of Wonder) Group! – - a new program for women in New Denver. Computers and internet connections were provided to a group of women. The group meets face-to-face weekly and will soon be set up to meet virtually with each other and with other on-line support groups.

Programs and services are offered in partnership with School District #10, Selkirk College, Nakusp Public Library, Success by Six, Public Health, CAPC (Community Access Program for Children), CAP (Community Access Program) and the Healthy Families Resource Group.
